I notice there are 2 cases of student that have wrong thinking about how to learn dance :

  • Type 1 : This student want to learn from open class only, or learn by him/her self (from books, video, and internet). He or she thinks that he could achieve the good result or become a "good dancer" without spending a lot of money by taking private lessons.
  • Type 2 : This student only want to learn by private lesson, while he or she think that open class, book, or other information is only wasting time.

I could say that this both kind of type is just take an extremely opinion. Both is right but only one is wrong. Balance is needed in those programs, private lesson or open class play an important role for dancer in their training. As each lesson has their own contribution to rising the skill of the dancer.

Open Class

From open class, the dancer will learn many general things of the dancing, for example : basic step and basic movement; without drown into the details of the technique. In open class, the dancer will get used to dancing in the crowd which useful for him or her as an experience of the floorcraft in the competition. In open class the dancer could dancing with another person, as an additional experience to be a good leader for man or a good follower for lady.

Private Lesson

From private lesson, the dancer will learn deep more about technique, where they can emphasized their skill on the technique and the details of every basic step or part of their coreography. The dancer could learn suitable coreography for them, which perfectly match with their character or capability. In the private lesson, the dancer could ask more specifically about their problem in dancing, which maybe they couldn't ask in the open class as the time will be limited for everyone in the class.

Guide for success

Dancer who want to increase their capability should joining both open class and private lesson, where they will learn the basic steps by open class which the cost will be cheaper, and extend their capability more personally in the private lesson. And of course individual training is another way that the dancer should do, so the lesson they got from open class or private lesson will more effective and not wasting the money and time.
